CIA Artwork, Coke Skirt and Good Film Critics

Budget Logo: Start humming some Ray Parker Jr. and check out this high-end artwork from the CIA, they “Ain’t Afraid of No Terrorists”.

All Coked Up: “Um, could you not stick your fingers in my coin slot?

Photo Contest: This just in from Rachel: “Post Your Favorite Photos of Philly to Win a Trip to Paris!” Hit the streets of Philly, take some candid snapshots and you could capture something unexpectedly brilliant or most likely, a crime in progress.

Must Reads: Sean Burns is the only movie reviewer I really trust. Unlike most film critics, he does not attempt to overwhelm you with the requisite “I know so much more about movies than you do and watch me prove it” blather (even though he does indeed know his stuff); instead he gets right to the point in a humorous, no B.S. manner. Check out his column every week in Philly Weekly before you hit the multiplex. If you dig the high brow critiques of the cinema with just a sprinkling of sliver screen history, The New Yorker’s Anthony Lane is a must read each week.

Speaking of that snooty mag with the incredibly long articles I usually lose interest in, the David Sedaris piece in the last food issue was hysterical, please read TASTELESS. If you eat your food with alarming speed, like me, you’ll enjoy it even more. I have a “barely tolerate/mostly” hate relationship with Entertainment Weekly, way too much “Hooray for everything famous people do!” for me in the magazine and not enough bashing constructive criticism, but on occasion they’ll hit it on the nose. Case in point, Gillian Flynn does a nice job telling you why the popular show “Heroes” is not very good.

My biggest EW gripe: The Stephen King column just plain blows. He’s supposed to be the ominous dark lord of horror, not some fawning fan-girl telling you how much he likes hiking and listening to the latest Alison Krauss CD.
