Hi Beth,

Thanks for writing and I'm very sorry to hear about your Dad. I'm not a man for doling out wisdom, but thinking about your dad and talking about him will eventually turn from a really gut-wrenching experience into something positive for you and others. It took me many years, but I found some peace.

Keep the Yahama plugged in! My daughter still plays the Fun Machine and the spirit of Don marches on.

I'm so grateful and glad that I found this entry. I am coming up on the first anniversary of my own fun dad's untimely passing and I have been struggling to know just how to honor him in the way he would want and I think, after reading this, I will spend some time writing down the things he did that my brothers, sister, mom and I loved... Including the Christmas a truck pulled up and dropped off a Yamaha organ! No joke. Our dad's were cut from the same cloth I think.

Thanks so much for this. All the very best to you.

"Big D" did some cooking in the army, so I'll get to the point. My brother and I would be downstairs getting ready to head over to the marina to play some soccer. Dad didn't make a light breakfast on "game day" because as a coach he made sure we ate a "full" meal at 7:00 AM. Most kids ate some fruit to prepare for 60 minutes of running around, "Big D" made sure we had the "PANCAKE"! It wasn't pancake's plural, it was a cake. Dad poured the batter into the frying pan and created one huge cake that could feed a battalion getting ready for D-DAY. My brother and I thought this was pregame ritual for everybody on the team and didn't think otherwise. My dad even let me have a few cups of coffee with my "Cake" to get ready for Bayhead, Bradley Beach, or Avon. Jeff and I ran like wind for the entire first half as Big D coached us on. Once half time hit and the rest of the kids ran to the sidelines to hydrate and grab some more fruit and water Jeff and I had other plans. The port-a-johns were right behind the goal and we both had a "calling" thanks to the "Cakes" and coffee that dad made for us before the game. While "Big D" would give a pep talk and George Parker would hand out 2nd half assignments, Jeff and I sat for 20 minutes of halftime thanking my father for the gift of coffee and the "CAKE" in the stalls. Great man, great fun and what a great place to grow up.. Belmar.
