If you enjoy any of the following — indie rock, Star Wars, brilliant art, classic movies, white guys with nerd glasses, Steve Guttenberg, detailed illustrations, Blade Runner, print-making, stunning creativity, Muppets! — fire up Netflix for a nice one-two punch of high quality poster art documentaries.
“The documentary explores the origins of the gig poster scene and its current state through interviews with poster artists, the featured bands as well as gallery owners. It explains the technique of poster making and highlights milestone events for the formation of the scene such as the Flatstock poster fair at SXSW and art shows of some of the most renowned gig poster artists.”
This well-paced and good-humored doc features more than a few of my favorite artists including the very charming Jay Ryan and Dan Stiles (I own five of his prints, I’m such a bragger!) and some outstanding music. I would buy the soundtrack if there was one. Someone get on that.
“Drew Struzan is an American artist known for his more than 150 movie posters, which include all the films in the Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Rambo and Star Wars film series. He has also painted album covers, collectibles, and book covers.”
Struzan is an insanely talented artist and a humble guy with a triumphant story any hard-working creative type should embrace. Warning: Star Wars nerds might passed out with glee while watching him discuss the creation and inspiration for all the films’ poster art.
