The Goodness Vol. 2

October 5, 2018

Hi Friends, I got some nice feedback on The Goodness Vol. 1 so here is (drum intro from “The Queen Is Dead”) The Goodness Vol. 2. It is jam packed with twice the goodness.

The VHS Guys – Atlas Obscura

Need a refresher on how to spot a counterfeit Beanie Baby? How about the proper way to clean a McDonald’s bathroom? Well you’re in luck, Joe and Nick from the Found Footage Festival can hook you up with just the right dusty old VHS tape.

The Illuminator –  Discover how this renegade art-activist collective project their messages on buildings both big and small. “The Illuminator van is a white 2002 Ford Econoline 350 diesel. We hacked it, installing a periscoping platform that can raise and lower a large projector through the roof, and then tilt and swivel as needed.”

The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. by Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland

“Agents are trained in period-specific languages and combat techniques and magically sent back to 1601 London and the 1203-1204 Constantinople, among other times and places. The object is to alter historical events to subtly help the United States government, but it has to be done carefully and methodically to avoid Diachronic Shear.”

I highly recommend this thrilling time-travel novel especially if you are a fan of British magic geekery like the classic Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell.

British Travel Shows

Jack Whitehall: Travels with My Father – Netflix

A charming British comedian — who should really star in a “Young Jim Halpert” movie ASAP — travels around Southeast Asia with his very stodgy father. The running gag where Jack keeps mentioning how his very distant dad sent him away to boarding school is both hilarious and a bit heartbreaking.

The Trip – Netflix

Comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon review restaurants in the north of England, Italy and Spain. The food and the locations look amazing in this beautifully shot Michael Winterbottom series but the true raison d’être of this tasty travelogue is showing these two master mimics effortlessly trying to top each other with their spot-on Al Pacino, Michael Caine and Dustin Hoffman impressions (and so many more). It is truly laugh out loud funny.

Very Good Playlists

Podcast Recommendation: It Happened in Hollywood

I really dig the format of this new podcast (prerecorded interview with spliced in commentary) and the hosts, Hollywood Reporter senior writer @SethAbramovitch and writer comedian @ChipPope (Hell yeah, Austen Stories!) are funny and insightful. The debut episode unearths the horror classic “The Exorcist” and good lord, does director William Friedkin have some crazy and disturbing stories.

Hero: Yuki Kawauchi Is Distance Running’s Elite Oddball

Even if you don’t care about running you have to admire this fella’s insane training regimen while working 40 hours a week. “Most of the world’s top marathon runners are full-time athletes who race two marathons a year, one in the spring, another in the fall. Chicago will be Kawauchi’s ninth marathon of 2018. As August faded into September, he ran two in eight days. He has also run two ultramarathons.”

“TIME ZERO: the last year of Polaroid film” – What happens when the company who makes the film for your beloved iconic camera goes out of business?

Ear worm: It is impossible to not sing along, and dare I say fall in love, with this pet store jingle. Hat tip to @ArkansasFred for this gem.

“Tween Fest” – YouTube

Watch this brutally hilarious web series co-written by Nick Ciarelli and Brad Evans and then immediately throw your teen’s tablet, phone and gaming device in the nearest sewer.
