The Goodness Vol. 3
One of our new dogs has separation anxiety and a nighttime barking issue (“Hey, where are you guys? Guys…?”) so your pal Jeff is a wee bit sleep deprived of late. With that in mind, please forgive any typos and as always, please feel free to share any and all of the goodness displayed below.
I present to you… (Topper Headon drum intro from “Tommy Gun”)… Volume. 3!
Sun Tunnels by Nancy Holt
“Sun Tunnels stands as a massive testament to human will. The work’s orientation is precisely calibrated so that its four tubes frame the sun on the horizon at the summer and winter solstices, creating a kind of lens that engulfs the body.”
Minor Thread – “A Band T-Shirt Archivist..who crushed over 8 years, 3000+ Days in a row and still going, with out wearing the same band shirt twice. Boom”
Japanese Breakfast – Tiny Desk Concert
This is really lovely and we deserve lovely things. Enjoy some more breakfast.
“Maine Cabin Masters” – DIY Network
“Builder Chase Morrill is teaming up with his brother, sister and best friend to save and transform abandoned cabins buried deep in the remote woods of Maine.”
I live in an old house and can’t afford fancy upgrades so I don’t watch any home remodeling shows where the owners are planning their $75,000 powder room upgrade. I do however, love this show where the average budget is between $20,000 and $30,000 to redo the entire cabin and the the property around it. Chase and his colorful team are creative, charming, funny, and easily have the best accents on TV.
Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup by John Carreyrou
“The full inside story of the breathtaking rise and shocking collapse of Theranos, the multibillion-dollar biotech startup, by the prize-winning journalist who first broke the story and pursued it to the end, despite pressure from its charismatic CEO and threats by her lawyers.”
Good lord, this book is insanely frightening and maddening but ultimately rewarding because for once, the bad guys (well, mostly the bad woman) get their comeuppance. Seriously, you’ll be saying “How is this happening?!” at the end of every chapter.

My Favorite Music Documentaries
Am I the best at watching band docs? Probably. I really put in the time and effort (sits on the couch with a tub of hummus, presses play). Enjoy these enthralling tales…
R.E.M. by MTV – Best band of the 80s gets a nice retrospective here, lots of good early footage and tons of Michael Stipe weirdness.
THE DAMNED: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead – This band put out the first great punk song ever and they’ll tell you about it.
Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me Movie – This is a truly beautiful story of an iconic musician and his family dealing bravely with his Alzheimer’s Disease, can’t recommend this enough.
Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC – Solid history of DC punk with all the requisite players interviewed.
Soul Boys of the Western World – You don’t have to like the band Spandeau Ballet to enjoy this doc, lots of good inter-band dynamics (so much fighting!).
What Did You Expect? The Archers of Loaf – a fun short doc highlighting a 2011 reunion of one of the 90s greatest bands.
Couldn’t You Wait? The Story of Silkworm – An inspiring and tragic story of indie rock legends and their 18-year career.
Filmage: The Story of Descendents/All – The story of one of my favorite bands done incredibly well. Viva La Bill Stevenson!
Wild Boys: The Story of Duran Duran – Was not really a fan of theirs as a kid but now I dig them now. Solid documentary.
A Band Called Death – African-American musicians playing punk music way ahead of its time.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin’ Down a Dream – 4 hours longs and you still want more. What an awesome guy.
History of the Eagles – For a guy who hates the Eagles, I certainly enjoyed the hell out of this fascinating doc about big harmonies and bigger egos.
Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me – A riveting look at the rise and fall of the 70s-era power pop legends.
Merge Records: 25 Years in 24 Minutes – Nice/smart people producing great music the right way for a quarter of a century.
I Want My Name Back – Creators of the seminal rap mega-hit “Rapper’s Delight” got screwed, this is their story.
We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen – Poignant look back at a seminal punk band that will bring you much joy and many tears.
DiG! – I don’t care for the music of the Brian Jonestown Massacre or the Dandy Warhols but watching this petty rivalry was a lot of fun.

“Meet the animals and #humanimals of Farm Sanctuary with National Shelter Director Susie Coston and shelter staff!”
I most certainly will!
Birth Day Rising!
Happy Birthday to my favorite musician, Bob Mould. His music flipped a switch in me 30 years ago and I have never stopped listening. He still rocks hard.
