Favorite Alternative Jams by Women

October 27, 2023

We have WXPN playing in our house all day, we give them money each month, and my wife loves to go to their Free at Noon shows. Despite more and more classic rock creeping into their airwaves (a minor quibble), I enjoy the station a lot. “The Moring Show” with Kristen and Bob, “Sleepy Hallow” with my man Chuck Elliot, and “Land of the Lost” with Robert Drake are my favorite shows. One thing XPN has always excelled at is playing and promoting female artists. Online radio station Soma.FM also does a stellar job with its Indie Pop Rocks channel.

Right now, XPN is compiling an “885 Greatest Songs by Women” list. They are asking listeners to submit their Top 10 songs that feature lead vocals performed by a woman. This is quite impossible for me to narrow down so, I made a playlist (in NO particular order) to help with my selections. These are mostly alternative gems with a couple of pop and classic jams tossed in. Please note, I’m an old guy who still predominantly listens to punk, hardcore, shoegaze, and 80s new wave—and I have not listened to pop music in like 30 years—so please don’t yell at me for what I have missed. I encourage you to make your own playlists and go for a walk, jog, or bike ride and enjoy some tunes while crunching some leaves, it’s great therapy.

Lastly, I know Spotify sucks more and more for artists and I am trying to figure out a good alternative, but until then here is my “Favorite Alternative Jams by Women” playlist.

And here is a list of the available artists on Bandcamp. Please support them!
